My research topic is on autism with including Asperger’s. I am interested on this topic because I want to know more about autism and what it is because I wanna know how it affects children around the world. My research topic is what are the advantages and disadvantages of autism. This related to Temple Grandin’s chapter “From the Margins to the Mainstream” because temple in the story talks about autism and she autism so it was harder for her to have advantages like other students. Autism is a complex disorder of brain development and when parents tell their child not to socialize with others it can make social communication harder.
Autism is a complex disorder of brain development “these disorders are characterized in having degrees, by difficulties in social interaction”. “Autism has its roots in early brain development. However, the most obvious signs of autism and symptoms of autism tend to emerge between 12 and 18 months of age. Some infants and toddlers begin develop normally until the second year of life, when they lose skills and develop autism – a pattern called “regression”. When people have autism they act very different they have a lot of mental breakdowns when a little thing happens to them (Autism). They have mental breakdowns because they show different feelings with others mostly they get mental breakdowns because the things they do or what others do to them for example we have this saying at Cal Prep Don’t yuck someone’s yum. What that is if you see a kid having a mental you may look at them oddly and the kid that had mental breakdown is embarrassed by all the other kids looking at him oddly. For my research topic is how parents act when their child has autism however it shows that when someone’s child has autism the parents turn into experts, they turn into experts because they starting to include psychologist, education and medical professional for their child. Often parents notice that their child has autism because of the symptoms and their behavior, the symptoms are “Not responding to his or hers name failing to make eye contact and playing with toys unusual in repetitive ways” (Ways you know your child has autism). The child likes to act very different than others because their emotions is different than others. If something was to happen to them they would have a mental breakdown (Ways you know your child has autism). That’s when the parents really start to care about their child so they start to be overprotective.
Trying to socialize when having autism can be rough. When trying to communicate with people may have these atypical facial expressions and atypical body postures (Finding friends with autism). Finding a job is also difficult for them because study shows that “Many people said that they wanted paid work, but this had proved difficult to obtain or sustain”. “The difficulties experienced related to a number of different factors including employers’ lack of understanding about autism and Asperger syndrome, the social and communication difficulties people experienced (see ‘Communication and Interaction’), anxiety issues, difficulties in applying for jobs or handling interview situations effectively, difficulty multi-tasking or time management and obsessional behavior” (Finding jobs). When having autism you can get bullied a lot. For example In Temple Grandin she gets bullied and whenever she got bullied she would get into fights and have mental breakdowns. So that’s why it’s hard for them to socialize.
In conclusion I listed all my the disadvantages of having autism is getting many mental breakdowns because they start to express different feelings with others and they don’t really get to be social with others if they express themselves very different with others. Even with family members they don’t feel comfortable socializing with others. So there’s many disadvantages that I have written in my essay.
