The topic that i’m researching is blindness. I wanted to research this because  I know some people that were close to having legal blindness. This relates to Temple Grandin’s chapter “From the Margins to the Mainstream” because blindness and autism are both disease that affects the body in some type of way.My question is What is blindness, what are the causes and how does it affect people? Blindness is a disease that causes you to have permanent eye loss without the possibility of glasses.

Blindness is a severe vision impairment not correctable by standard glasses, contact lens, medicine, and surgery. when you have blindness it means your vision is gone in both eyes(what is blindness source #1).Blindness is a lack of vision and can not be cured. Blindness it basically a disease that you may not fix you because your vision is gone(source#1). You can prevent it though because 80%-90% of the blindness in the world is preventable through a combination of education, access to good medical care, and provision of glasses (source #1).If you don’t have  medical or health care then there are agents and funds places that can help you but you should have a eye doctor so you can check your eyes ahead of time (source #2).

In addition blindness has many causes including “accidents or injuries to the surface of eyes, diabetes a disease in which the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired, resulting in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates and elevated levels of glucose in the blood and urine ,glaucoma is a condition that causes damage to your eye’s optic nerve and gets worse over time, and macular degeneration affects the central part of the retina the macula and resulting in distortion or loss of central vision”(source #3). Common causes of blindness are hard to develop like infections of the cornea or retina(source #2). A certain thing that gets blindness is cataracts because they affects the sight and messes up the lens(source #2). You can also get blindness through genes because if your mom has it then you have a one 1 out of 5 to most likely get it and you know you have blindness when you have certain symptoms like blurry vision or you can see from a certain distance (source #3).

Similarly when you’re blind you can’t see anything at all, you have completely non-vision sight and you use a stick called “the white stick’ to help direct you or to help you get around especially in public because it might be can not drive and can’t even participate in group task but people has personal task for you to feel like you included(source #4). African Americans and Hispanics are at a higher risk of getting diabetes than Caucasians because the thing that they eat like sugar and other things lead to diabetes and glaucoma so they have a higher risk of blindness (source #3).I feel Black people and White people have a higher risk because we use lots of sugar in random things such as drinks even cereal. Some of the conditions described below are heredity so basically are passed down through genes (source #3). This is important to know  because if you don’t take care of yourself right then you can be diagnosed with diabetes.

All of the thing that I talk about are all facts and information about blindness.Blindness is a very important thing to know about especially if a family member has it because it’s a life changer that means you’ll have it forever. My perspective after this project has changed because at first i didn’t think it was serious but after this I have learned a lot  maybe even to change some thing I do so yes my perspective has changed. One thing I do want to know is who first discovered blindness or the first person who had it?
